The "Speaking of Safety" seminar was developed by two professionals working in the maritime realm. Chris, a first responder working search and rescue on the water, recognized that many boaters lacked the training they needed to operate safely during everyday and emergency situations. John, a marine electronics installer, recognized that many boaters lacked confidence in their ability to use equipment on the boat that could simplify their lives on the water, or save them in the event of an emergency. Together they hope to address issues that have seriously impacted boater's well-being on the water. "It MATTERS" is an essential chapter in this series designed to enhance your skills underway by adding effective communication, emergency response, and hands on marine electronics skills to your everyday boating experiences.
Your instructors will focus on the importance of effective communication, highlighting best practices utilized by the U.S. Coast Guard during everyday operations
Professional experiences drawn from real world situations
VHF use, DSC test calling, and AIS collision avoidance hands on demonstrations
Best practices for vessel and gear maintenance to avoid fire hazards and inoperability
When and how you should request assistance on the water, what equipment you should use, and why
As part of the course, you will have access to real-world video and audio recordings. Through them, you will gain an in-depth understanding of everything discussed in class, why it is important to you, and how it could ultimately save your life on the water.
